The information below will help you know what subjects to take if you wish to be a filmmaker. The information below will also help you know what grades you would need for the university of your choice.


1. New York Film Academy - https://www.nyfa.edu/filmmaking/

To get into the school you must have a high school diploma. There is no minimum GPA required but you must be able to speak English and have a huge desire to explore the art and craft of storytelling.

The required application materials to get into the academy are:

  • Completed Undergraduate (BFA) Program Application

  • Application fee

  • High School Transcript

  • SAT or ACT scores (for Domestic students only)

  • Narrative Statement

  • Letters of Recommendation

  • Creative Portfolio

  • Proof of English Proficiency

In this college there are 5 film degrees.

Those are:

  • Master of Fine Arts in Filmmaking

  • Master of Arts in Film and Media Production

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Filmmaking

  • Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies

  • Associate of Fine Arts in Filmmaking

There are 2 Film Programs in this school and they are:

  • 2-Year Filmmaking Program

  • 1-Year Filmmaking Program

The tuition fees of the academy are $28,000 USD without financial aid. With a room, board and other fees combined , $28,500.

To get into this school you need to take film HL or SL when you make your DP or CP choices.

To get into the school you must be 18 years old or older. To get into the school you must have a 2:1 honours degree from a UK university or overseas equivalent. For this school you need to be good at English, and if English is not your first language you will have to prove with documented evidence that you can speak English and that you can attend the course. If you are not an EU student and are international, you have to achieve an overall IELTS 6.5. With 6.5 in writing and no less than IELTS 5.5 in each other subject. (IELTS - The International English Language Testing System)

If you are a student with a degree below a 2:1 equivalent you can still apply, but you must submit a compulsory academic essay of a minimum of 750 words to the maximum of 1000 words. If you do not have a 2:1 degree but poses a relevant work experience you can still apply but you need to submit a compulsory academic essay (750 - 1000 words), a professional industry reference and a professional CV.

The amount you need to pay can vary depending on timing, duration and craft type.

Scholarships are given to students who demonstrate the potential to be exceptional filmmakers and who already have compelling stories to tell. The students that want to get a scholarship must be able to show their passion for and dedication to making films. This school is particularly interested in students from conflict zones and developing countries. They are looking for individuals that possess distinctive and unique filmmaking voices. The scholarship is only given to students who have a film that has achieved success for example at a reputable festival.

You must submit a portfolio of work alongside your application which outlines your experience and how you believe a scholarship place at the Met Film School would benefit your career development. Plus you will need to demonstrate that your financial situation would ordinarily make it impossible for you to be able to undertake such a programme.

3. Full Sail University - https://www.fullsail.edu/

The undergraduate tuition and fees are 57,000 USD

To get into this school you must submit a completed application for admission and fulfill all of its requirements. The application fee is $75 and it must be submitted with the application. You must provide a documentation of your high school graduation, passing educational development scores/transcripts or other equivalent and a state-approved diploma examination prior to starting a program. You have to give in a government-issued photo identification like a driver’s licence, passport or state-issued ID card. You need to have a verification of English proficiency if primary language. As part of the application process, you will be asked to complete an interview with an Admissions Representative.

To be eligible to get a scholarship you must have attended one of Full Sail University’s monthly behind the scenes tours or qualifying International Experience Center events prior to and no longer than one year before beginning class. Complete and submit the Dedication Scholarship application, and an original 250 word essay on “Dedication and My Career Dream” prior to the first day of class in order to be eligible for a $1,000 scholarship award in the first academic year. You have to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 for first academic year, for an additional $500 award, and for another additional $500 award you have to maintain a minimum cumulative Global Professionalism Standards (GPS) score of 100% for the first academic year.
