Your Guide to LAW

Before you take up law and make it your future, think "why law"? When answering this question, consider your reasons carefully and your source of motivation. Law affects all of our lives, it's not easy, it's time consuming and needs a lot of hard work, commitment, dedication, determination and patience. Think again as to why you are considering to study/practice law in the future and stand out from the rest!

Your IB Choices:

HL

  • You are required to take a higher level writing based subject which notably would be either HL Humanities Course or HL English course in order for you to be accepted into a University.

  • Recommended: to do both but if you do not want to do both it’s again recommended that you do History at HL (*because apparently History is the possibly closest IB subject to Law that Universities would want you have done. Also, the Universities would usually prefer if you did history at HL because history involves essay writing which helps in analytical skills)

  • Maths could also be one of your subjects at HL or you could also do a science subject at HL which would also be great when applying for Universities since quite a few universities would want their candidates to have excelled in science as well as humanities.

  • If English is not your first language than you could take your mother tongue for HL considering your levels in English in order to achieve a good grade at a HL subject which would be again useful when applying to universities because they would want grades 776, 766 at HL subjects.

1. HL Maths, English, History

2. HL Maths, Humanities, Humanities

3. HL Economics, Maths, English Lit

4. HL History, Mother Tongue, A Science

5. HL Maths, History, Mother Tongue

6. HL Maths, Science, English

SL

  • For Standard Level you could take subjects depending on your HL subjects

  • Humanities and a science would be preferable if you did not take it as a HL

Best Recommended:

1. SL Biology, Maths SL/Maths Studies, Geography

2. SL English Lit, Language (depending on the level), A Science

3. SL History/Economics, Language (depending on the level), A Science

4. SL French, A Science, English

5. SL Maths, English, A Language

6. SL Humanities, Math, A Language

For law there isn’t really a particular subject that you have to take! You could also take HL Maths, Chemistry, Physics and you could get into a good University. Also, Law Universities love it when candidates have a science as one of their choices! Also, even if you pick subjects at random and score really well in each one of them at HL, you will be able to get into a rather good University.

1. Cambridge University

Entry Requirements (IB):

No specific subjects required, however;

  • Student has to have Between 40 and 42 points out of 45 with 7 7 6 in HL Subjects

  • The applicant is preferably required to achieve a 7 in a particular subject at HL

  • SL Subjects will satisfy AS Level subject requirements and HL Level subjects will satisfy A Level subject requirements as per the IGCSE requirements

Funding Opportunities:

To Obtain both scholarships and grant/funds:

The applicant needs to be a British Citizen or a citizen of a country of the Commonwealth

Also, he/she “has ‘declared in writing the sincere intention of qualifying as a barrister or a solicitor or as a teacher of law, and of practising or teaching law accordingly’”.

2. Oxford University

Entry Requirements (IB)

  • 38 points (including core points) with 666 at HL subjects

  • Students are required to show Evidence to demonstrate that they are appropriately numerate

  • If the applicant wants to study in France, Germany or Spain the applicants are expected to have that particular relevant modern language at a HL in the IB

  • If the applicant wants to study in Italy the candidate is to demonstrate at least sufficient language aptitude to be able to study in Italy

  • All the candidates also have to take the Law National Admissions Test (LNAT) as a part of the application

Funding Opportunities:

A full loan is available to cover tuition fees for Home (UK)/EU students undertaking their first undergraduate degree

Islands students are also granted financial support but different support to that of students from the rest of the UK

Overseas students also have a different funding processes through other scholarships

3. University College London (UCL)

Entry Requirements (IB)

  • 39 points and a score of 19 points in three HL subjects with no score lower than 5

  • Additional tests which are required: - Law National Admissions Test (LNAT)

  • The English level for this programme is advanced

4. Edinburgh University

Entry Requirements (IB)

  • 43 points required and need grades 776 at HL subjects - 34 points with grades 655 at HL subjects including English.

  • SL Maths or an approved science subject at 4.

5. King's College London (KCL)

Entry Requirements (IB)

  • 35 points required including 766 in three HL subjects with TOK/EE included

  • No preferred subjects and no required subjects

  • All the applicants are required to have taken the Law National Admissions Test (LNAT) by 20 January
