Following their trip to Brussels, the Senior Boys football team shortly faced their biggest game of the year. For the first time in the school's history, they were in the Coupe Romande final, to be played against Le Rosey on their home turf. Canton Vaud isn’t a far journey for the Nation's boys, but the effect of playing away was constantly on their minds.
The game started like a dream, scoring a quick goal within the first minute of play, closely followed by a second, the Nation's boys felt a confidence previously thought to be unrealistic. However, this confidence got the best of them, as after 10 minutes of enjoyment, the Vaudois were able to bring the game back to 2-2 within a matter of minutes. With Le Rosey completely flipping the script going into the halftime break, they were now on equal terms at 2-2. With serious words said on both benches over the break, Le Rosey came back full of confidence in their lead, whilst Nations came back with a seemingly forced envy, to turn the game around. Le Rosey didn’t need long to get going again, adding two more goals to the score, making it 4-2. All seemed lost for our boys as Le Rosey turned the final into a training ground. All Nations needed was one goal to build momentum, and that's when it all changed. After 63 minutes of play, Nations were able to score bring them within one. Following the goal, it was as if a whole new team was on the pitch; the momentum of the goal carried them through every pass and every tackle. And just like that, the scores were once again equal at 4-4.
Now with unstoppable momentum, Nations put two more past Le Rosey, their 6th goal now ensuring their potential victory. All that was left to do was keep Le Rosey out, and the Coupe Romande was theirs. With everyone back in defence, Le Rosey came at them with attack after attack, everything proving futile, until five minutes from the end. Le Rosey were awarded a penalty, which brought them back within one goal of Nation’s. The boys had to fight hard for the remaining time to hold on to their lead. After an exhausting effort, the final whistle went, and Nations were finally able to celebrate their victory. Players and students alike all joined in the centre circle to thank each other and their coach for their now historic season in the Coupe Romande, followed by the trophy presentation and the loud bus ride home. As a large portion of the team moves on to university, the responsibility of retaining the cup next year falls on the younger team members to take the initiative and lead the team.
